First year programmes | Senior courses

The Chinese Language and Literature Section of the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Cape Town is home to a wide range of courses in Chinese Language, Literature, CSP (Chinese for Specific Purposes), such as Business Chinese, Communicative Chinese, Medicine Chinese, and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The aim of the Chinese section is to teach language skills and promote Chinese culture. As China has become South Africa’s top trading partner, the demand for local graduates who are fluent in Chinese is greater than ever. Currently, only three universities in South Africa offer Chinese studies to students: the University of Stellenbosch (since 2001); Rhodes University (since 2010) and UCT. UCT commenced Mandarin Chinese courses in 2011. The Chinese Language & Literature section is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at UCT.

The preliminary contest of the 11th Chinese Language Proficiency Competition was held  in Stellenbosch, in 2012. Participants were drawn from the Universities of Stellenbosch, Rhodes, Cape Town and South Africa (UNISA).  UCT students walked away with almost half of the total competition prizes.

Mandarin course convenor, Professor Wu Qianlong, hosted the first Mandarin language summer camp for UCT students during the June 2011 vacation. 37 students took part in an intensive language and cultural tour of the cities of Guangzhou, Xi’an and Beijing in China.

Undergraduate courses

The Chinese Language and Literature Section teaches Mandarin at undergraduate level. Students will be admitted to the Chinese Language and Literature Section whether or not they have already studied Mandarin. The courses offered by the Chinese Language and Literature Section are designed for students of Mandarin as a foreign language. Students for whom Mandarin is a second or home language will be accepted under certain conditions, and after prior discussion with the Section Head.

Initial Mandarin A & B are first-year courses for those who have never studied the language before. Students who have already studied Mandarin will most likely be admitted at second-year level. Under certain conditions students with some prior knowledge of Mandarin may be admitted to the first-year courses.
